Climbing pilot brings ten men together for skills and regular sessions

A programme supported by Sport NI helped ten men develop climbing skills, with participants continuing to organise weekly sessions after the course.

How the pilot developed

Mountaineering Ireland and the Outdoor Partnership Northern Ireland piloted the programme following a conversation at a climbing session in summer 2026, according to Sport NI.

Ten men took part in ten training days, progressing from introductory climbing to lead climbing, multi-pitch work and preparation for instructor training. Support came through Sport NI's System Partner Investment using National Lottery funding.

What participants are doing next

Sport NI reports that several participants joined clubs and continued climbing. The group still organises weekly sessions, and two participants are working towards Rock Climbing Instructor qualifications.

The report describes participants' experiences of increased confidence and social connection. Read Sport NI's report for participant feedback and programme detail.
